From Anxious Beginner to 500 Sessions: Gemma's Story at RAW Inc Hornchurch
Gemma has just completed her 500th session at RAW Inc. For anyone who trains alongside her, that number won't come as a surprise. She's one of our most consistent members and always the first to cheer on everyone else in the room. What might surprise people is where she started.
Where Gemma started
A long-term back injury had put Gemma off training for years. She had very little gym experience, and the thought of walking into a gym made her anxious. Like a lot of people we speak to in Hornchurch, she wanted to get stronger and feel better in her body, and she was worried training might make her back worse.
Building the foundation first
Gemma started with our six-week Fundamentals programme, the entry point for every new RAW member. Because she was starting from scratch, her coaches built everything around her injury from day one.The early weeks focused on the basics. She learned how to brace, move well and build strength through her core, hips and back at a pace her body could handle. Every exercise was chosen with her back in mind, and progressions only came once she was moving confidently.
That careful start gave her a solid base to build everything else on. This is how small group personal training works at RAW. Groups are small, so your coach knows your history, watches every rep and adjusts the session to suit you. Gemma trained alongside other members with a plan that fitted her.
Showing up again and again
Gemma got to 500 sessions by turning up. Week after week she kept coming back, and the strength she was building started to show in her everyday life as well as on the gym floor. Consistency is the thing we talk about most with new members, and Gemma is one of the clearest examples we have of what it can do.
Gemma today
Today Gemma is strong, capable and confident. She lifts with great technique, trains with a smile and has become a real cornerstone of the RAW Fam. New members often find her the most welcoming face in the room, which makes sense given she remembers exactly how it felt to be new.[
Advice for anyone starting with an injury
Gemma's story is a good reminder that you can start exactly where you are. Our coaches take the time to understand your history and build your training around it. If you have an ongoing injury, we always recommend checking in with your GP or physio too, and we're happy to work alongside their advice.
