"If you are considering joining the RAW family then my advice is do it, you won’t regret it, this is more than just a gym!"
For as long as I can remember I have been struggling with my weight and have been yo-yoing constantly between losing and gaining and generally gaining more than I had lost!
I was in a really vicious circle. I have tried many things to try and break this circle such as different types of “diet” and various different gym memberships however nothing seemed to stick and I ended up worse off than before not only in weight but also in the wallet with all the unused gym memberships!
In January 2019 Gurjeet, who I have worked with for a number of years gave me the “Gift of Fitness’ which was an introduction into life at RAW via the RAW academy. Having seen the results Gurjeet has had over the previous few years I was very much of the mindset of what is there to lose (Well apart from a few lbs obviously!) so I grabbed the opportunity and got in touch.
I still remember walking in on my first day on the 9th January 2019 not knowing what to expect, seeing a HIIT class in full swing and thinking to myself “what have I let myself into”!
As I was looking for the nearest escape route I was greeted by Tom Murphy who put me at ease straight away and we got down to the initial consultation which included a weigh and measure and really made me think about my long term goals and then breaking these down into manageable chunks and we talked about accountability which is when I decided to set up my lee_losing_it instagram page which I find keep me motivated to achieve results.
After this I then had my “induction” session where Tom took me through the basic moves the would be used in the classes, although they were all pretty simple moves and it was just a run through of technique I had a real reality check on my fitness levels as the DOMS seriously kicked in over the next few days! This didn’t deter me though and I threw myself into the classes, which were really enjoyable and I quickly realised that this was going to be the environment I wanted to be in and where results will be achieved!
The thing that struck me the most then (and still does today) is the culture of the gym, this is not your average run of a mill Gym where you pay £100+ a month to watch people hogging benches and posing in the mirror, this is a community, a family even.
All of the coaches knew my name before I had met them, the people in the classes were all from different backgrounds, ages, fitness levels, sizes and shape but there was Zero Judgement. Everyone was there for the same reason of bettering themselves and the coaches were encouraging everyone to be the best that they can be and in a positive manner.
One of the things that still makes me smile a year on is the large motivational posters up around the gym and the one for me that sums the gym up is “strong people don’t put others down, they lift them up” and this is a value you can tell that all of the coaches hold. Not only do they run amazing classes which are challenging yet fun, they support with training plans, nutritional advice and run many social events which balance out fitness events such as Survivor series and Nuclear races with not so fitness based events such as socials and Christmas parties which is essential in finding that balance. It also clear that the team believe in what they do as they all take part in the classes are participants as well as coaches.
The team genuinely care, if you haven’t been in for a while they make contact to check if you are ok however you never feel pressured as they accept that we all have busy lives in one way or another.
I am now a year into my journey and the results have been more than I could have hoped for and at my 1 year anniversary weigh and measure I have lost 15.2kg and a total of 74cm in my measurements. Not only do I look better and feel better physically and am much fitter than I can remember I also feel better mentally. My home life has improved as a result as well as my performance at work and even through I am relatively shy by nature my confidence has massively improved.
Plus its always nice when people notice and comment on the results! The only downside I guess is I have had to spend a fair bit on getting new clothes, a nice problem to have though.
